Resumes for Recent College Graduates
Resumes for Recent College Graduates This is a question asked thousands of times every year across the country: How do I put together a great resume when Ive only just graduated from college? The overly simple answer is that you do it the same way you would if you had been in the workforce for 25 years. Its not that simple when you have little to no work experience, but it can be done in a slick and professional manner. When in doubt, hire an expert resume writer to help you. It will be money well spent in the long run. Hopefully, you obtained some work, volunteer or internship experience while in college. Its important to remember that experience doesnt have to have been paid to count. Many new graduates incorrectly assume that if they were not paid during the internship or for volunteer service that it doesnt count. The reality is that everything counts. An internship, especially one in your field, is every bit as valuable to a potential employer. Volunteer work as well. The most important thing to remember is that a potential employer is looking for someone who is a team player, will be great to work with and has the skills to do the job. They do not care how you got those skills. Employers also want to hire people who have been in real work environments before. Following a few common sense tips and ideas will make it possible for you to create a great resume and land a job that is right for you.

Tax Cuts Arent Only Reason Walmart Raised Its Minimum Wage
Tax Cuts Aren't Only Reason Walmart Raised Its Minimum Wage On Thursday, Walmart raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour from $9, citing the trillion-dollar tax cut signed late last year by President Donald Trump. The company also expanded its maternity and parental benefits and said some employees would be eligible for a cash bonus of up to $1,000. âTax reform gives us the opportunity to be more competitive globally and to accelerate plans for the U.S.,â the company said. The move is certainly good publicity. (While President Trump hasnât yet tweeted to crow about the move, past experience suggests it may only be a matter of time.) But taxes are hardly the whole story. In fact, with unemployment at just over 4% and workersâ real wages finally rising after years of sluggishness, the giant retailer might not have had much choice, regardless of what transpired in Washington last month. Indeed, Walmart had already raised its minimum wage to $9 an hour in 2015, and at the start of 2017 halved the length of the training period workers needed to complete in orders to get a raise to $10. And a Walmart spokesman acknowledged via email that the company had already planned an upcoming wage increase in âselect geographiesâ â" although he said there was no across-the-board hike planned prior to passage of the tax law. One company putting direct pressure on Walmart is its superstore rival, Target, which raised its own minimum wage to $11 a little over three months ago. And if that didnât put enough heat on Walmart, Target also said it plans to pay workers a minimum of $15 by 2020. At the time, Targetâs move prompted some observers to predict Walmart would react immediately. âThe news that Wall Street analysts, bond investors and Wal-Martâs competitors all feared on Tuesday didnât happen,â wrote Investors Business Daily in mid-October. âThe worry was that Wal-Mart, facing the same kind of wage pressures as Target amid 4.2% unemployment, would have to embark on a new round of pay increases.â In other words, while Walmart employees should certainly be happy to take home a little more, whatever the reason, shoppers should take the verbiage from the companyâs executives with a big grain of salt.

The Secret To Changing The Organizational Culture Of A Company - Work It Daily
The Secret To Changing The Organizational Culture Of A Company - Work It Daily A company is the sum total of its people and its culture. This is why it is impossible to separate the two without affecting both entities. Similarly, it is important to understand that this relationship between people and culture is the main reason why the people so vigorously oppose any changes to the culture. Related: Why Team Building Promotes Better Company Productivity Changes in organizational culture are inevitable and essential for the continued survival of the company. No organization could continue operating in any industry with outdated notions of corporate culture. Forcing the employees and the stakeholders to confirm to such ideas generally results in an implosion of the company. On the other hand, introducing any changes to the organizational structure is equally difficult. Management usually gets away with minor inconsequential changes but any effort to modify any mainstays of culture meets with heavy resistance. Changing the organizational culture is a mighty endeavor that presents a serious challenge to management. Perhaps this is because of the fact that the culture of an organization is actually a representation of the core values, goals, and the aspirations of the people of the organization. This is the main reason why people put up such a strong resistance to any change. Changes to the organizational culture are misinterpreted as a top to bottom change that affects the entire organization. While there are organizational changes that shake things from top to bottom, they are isolated occurrences. This misconception has become so well entrenched in corporate psychology that people show extreme reactions when they hear the words âchanges to organizational culture.â In reality, the best changes to organizational cultures come more as a novelty rather than a catastrophe. In other words, organizational change should be a series of gradual implementations rather than one single sweeping broad stroke. Gradual changes also have the benefit of hindsight. In many cases, the management implements a complete set of reforms in a single stroke. Once the policy is out, the reactions start to come in and the management has to deal with damage control and soothing ruffled feathers. The situation leaves no room for adjusting the post implementation impact of the change. The result is usually a recall of the policy with business returning to the usual pre change days. This is total loss in terms of corporate expertise and strategic changes to the organization. The best way of changing the organizational culture is to take it slow and go about it in small increments. After every successful step, the implementation team and the management should sit back and review both the process and its impact. This review must include an analysis of the organizational resistance. The factor of resistance is important enough to be the focus of any review of organizational change implementation process. By properly gauging the reactions, the implementation team could tweak the next stage of the process to head off resistance. This advantage is the real reason of the opting for a stage-by-stage implementation. The downside is that the implementation plan might go under revision after every implementation stage. According to many experts, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Management must need to differentiate between the organizational change agenda and the implementation used to accomplish the ends. The agenda is fixed and should not be changed under any circumstances. The implementation plan to achieve the agenda, however, remains fluid. A rigid implementation plan will only result in disaster as the implementation team slogs forward, regardless of the resistance factor. This scenario usually results in a complete failure of the process. Because of the magnitude of the issue, management will eventually discover that the only way of getting things done is to bring in the full force of the organization behind the project. In many cases, it is wise to start from the top instead of the bottom tugs of the organizational ladder. Resistance to change diminished considerably when the people see their managers supporting the change. Whether willingly or reluctantly, people start to go with the change and the process goes forward. In many cases, resistance drastically falls as people the top tiers o fetch organization supporting the change. Bring about organizational change is not an easy task. However, with a stage-by-stage implementation process, the hurdles could be removed and things start to move forward. 5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the Workplace
5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the Workplace 5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the WorkplaceNervous about re-entering the workforce? There are things you can do to set yourself up for success. TWEETFor many women, having a family means taking a break from working outside the house. According to a study done by Pew Research Center, 29% of all mothers did elend work outside the home in 2012 an increase over 23% in 1997. There are many reasons that explain the trend slow economy and the rising cost of childcare are just two of the factors. As children grow and some moms begin to contemplate returning to the professional workforce, they face unique challenges in their job search. How do you demonstrate you are relevant after being out of the job market for two (or 10) years? Will your career gap discourage prospective employers from considering you? Is being a mom a resume killer in todays competitive job market?Far from it. There are things you can do to set yourself up for a s uccessful career re-launch. The key to success is understanding what your prospective employers concerns might be, and structuring your resume and bewerbungsinterview responses in a strategic way that will put those concerns to rest.I do elend believe that there is a conspiracy to keep moms from returning to the workplace. Hiring managers just want their job openings filled with the best candidates. They might have legitimate hesitations when it comes to considering a candidate who has been out of the workforce for a number of years. Here is a short list of their concerns as they look at your application and notice your gap in work historyYou may not be up-to-date on your skills,You may not have kept up on the relevant trends and issues in the industry,You may have difficulty balancing responsibilities at home and outside work. From a hiring managers perspective, the costs of hiring and training a new employee are high. He or she doesnt want to make an expensive mistake, and may be i nclined to choose a less risky candidate (one with no employment gaps and recent work history). In my experience, it serves you best to address the issue proactively. Here are some steps you might consider.1. Camouflage that career gapConsider using a skills-based resume layout as opposed to a chronological one. It can highlight your transferable skills that line up with the job requirements, and take attention away from the employment gap.I do not recommend putting housekeeping or parenting skills on your resume (or discussing them in an interview) not because I dont believe they are valuable, but because in most cases they are not directly related to the job you are pursuing.Instead, focus on highlighting any relevant experience you may have gained. Did you run a library fundraiser for your childs school? That took business development, people management, and budget skills. It can also show that you have the ability to focus and the discipline to see a demanding project through to completion.Consider freelancing, contract work, or volunteering in a related field. Those entries in your career history will confirm that you are serious about returning to work, and have a history of successfully balancing the additional responsibilities with being a parent.2. Stay current on industry trendsThe pace of change around us is staggering. That statement is as true about technology as it is about industry trends. In order to stay relevant and up-to-date, consider joining professional association groups, and make a habit of reviewing industry publications. The time invested into nurturing these connections to the working world can be as little as 3-5 hours per month, and it pays off. Professional groups offer great opportunities for networking, and can give you a chance to practice your pitch and interview skills before you hit the recruiting circuit. 3. Keep your professional skills sharpTechnology changes quickly, and professional muscles go stiff without practice. Lo ok at the skills prospective employers are requiring as a baseline for the openings you would be interested in, and be strategic about highlighting what you have, and acquiring what you are missing. You have many options, from taking a class for a specific skill-set or technology platform to volunteering.4. Be strategic about where your lookIf we take judgment and our opinion of the way the world should be out of the picture, some employers simply want to hire and retain mothers more than others. Strategically, your time is better spent targeting companies where you will be viewed as a valuable addition - not those where you will have to apologize for the time spent raising kids.5. Dig deep and tap into your confidenceEven though this point comes last, it is critically important. Being out of the workforce for several years can make you feel that you are not as qualified as the next candidate. Hiring managers will read that lack of confidence in your cover letter, handshake, or your tone. The best way to combat that is personal clarity on why you are returning to work, and on the value that you will add. This is not about you, but about how you can be of service to your prospective employer. In closing, remember that you do not have to do this alone. There are great resources, online and offline, for moms re-entering the workforce who are concerned about a gap in work history. Here is a short list to get you started. Some of these have a membership fee, while others are free.Womenwork is a company dedicated to keeping women at work through all ages and stages. This website has a curated list of resources for working women, and offers additional benefits for a membership fee. iRelaunch is an online resource with advice for those returning to work.Corpsteam and Mom Corps is a national staffing and search company focusing exclusively on the placement of experienced professionals in fractional, flexible and virtual positions. The Glass Hammer is a professional caree r resource for women.Ellevate network offers online resources for professional women for a membership fee, and can work particularly well if there is a local chapter near you.Consider reconnecting with old mentors, co-workers, or bosses. They can be a valuable source of insight and advice.Let TopResume help you write the next chapter of your career. Heres how.Related Articles

15 Advantages of Video Interviews You Didnt Know About
15 Advantages of Video Interviews You Didnt Know AboutTechnology has made the hiring process much more streamlined, providing an improved experience for both einstellungsgesprcher and job binnenseeker alike. While bewerberinterview scheduling tools can help take the back-and-forth struggle out of hiring, other software such as a platform for conducting video interviews has also helped to alleviate hiring headaches. Video interviews are becoming increasingly popular among businesses of various sizes. They are especially useful during the initial stages of screening candidates, saving valuable time and resources and streamlining the hiring process. Here is a look at the reasons you should be using video interviews1. Ease the scheduling burden. When youre trying to bring 20 candidates in for face-to-face interviews, you can end up going back and forth via email for days, or even weeks, trying to find a time thats convenient for everyone. The scheduling arrangement becomes like a Tetris p uzzle. Then youre trying to juggle all of the conversations and get the proper personnel to sit in on the interviews. Needless to say, this becomes both time-consuming and stressful. Video interviews relieve much of the headache associated with this aspect of the hiring process, as it allows the candidate to answer questions when its convenient for them. Then the hiring manager and their team can watch ansicht responses when its conducive to their schedule. If these two schedules never sync up, it doesnt matter. The hiring manager is able to get a good sense of what this individual is all about. From there, they can opt to bring the person in for a face-to-face conversation if their video interview responses warrant further discussion. A greater number of candidates can be screened in less time, so more valuable time can be spent with the most qualified candidates before hiring.2.Improve performance tracking. After implementing video interviews into their hiring process, managers can take a look at their top performers and see if their video responses had anything in common. What did they talk about when they gave their replies to similar questions? What was their body language like? Where did they choose to record their interview? Use video interviewing to make a list of commonalities among top candidates.Click To TweetFrom there, they can look for commonalities that may help them choose strong candidates in the future. For example, if all the top performers seemed to have mentioned experience with a particular computer program or shared a similar professional development goal, in the future, that could be a flag to interviews when candidates show the saatkorn interests, knowledge, and potenzial.Being able to look back at particularly successful employees and compare that to the video screens of prospective candidates is a valuable and far more efficient performance tracking resource than old notes, compiled from the perspectives of many hiring personnel.3.Mak e your interviews more consistent. As much as a hiring manager tries to ask the same questions of each candidate, it can be easy to forget to cover a particular point or to go off track. Therefore, each professional gets a different interview experience. When it comes time to determine the best fit for the role, it can be challenging to decide because there wasnt consistency during the interview process. One-way video interviewing technology helps to eliminate this issue. It makes it easy to have complete consistency across the board. You set pre-determined questions for each candidate, and therefore only have these responses to compare when its decision-making time. You also have one record of the responses, so everyone involved in the hiring process has the same experience. This evens the playing field for all applicants, and it makes it easier for the hiring manager to make a better-informed decision when it comes down to the final stages of the process.4.Create a convenient interv iew experience for passive candidates. An individual might not desperately be seeking a new job, but perhaps theyre open to a new career opportunity particularly if the benefits, perks, and salary are right. However, if they have to drive across town during the workday for a formal interview, they will likely decide its too inconvenient and opts not to pursue the opportunity. Suddenly, you have lost a potentially great new hire.One-way video interviewing addresses this challenge head-on. Because of this, its become a powerful way to recruit passive job seekers. A busy full-time employee may not be able to rearrange their schedule to come in for a screening. However, they will probably have no issue with taking 15 or 20 minutes to record video interviews in the comfort of their own home. Therefore, theyre able to throw their hat in the ring and you may just find your next best hire.5. Get more insight before making big decisions. Those tasked with hiring quickly become aware of the co st associated with doing so, particularly when youre working with long-distance talent. If you want to bring these professionals in for an interview, you may need to fly them in, pay for meals and bettenburg rooms. Businesses that utilize video interviewing technology eliminate the high price point often associated with early recruiting. If you have your eye on someone who lives in another part of the world, you can invite them to take part in video interviews. Theres no need to pay for a flight and a hotel just to get a feel for what theyre about. From there, you can gauge whether its worth a more in-depth, in-person conversation, and the cost that comes with this type of dialogue.6. See the candidates command over technology.Regardless of the position for which youre hiring, you inevitably want the person who fills the role to have some degree of understanding about technology. In a subtle way, video interviewing software enables you to gauge their level of familiarity with an und erstanding of technology right off the bat. If the interview they record has no audio, for example, or the picture is blurry or slanted or doesnt get recorded, you might question whether they have the capabilities necessary to accomplish other technology-based tasks that would be asked of them should they be offered the job. Not to mention, what this says of their attention to detail and preparedness.7.Reduce the amount of small talk. When a person comes in for a face-to-face interview, theres going to be some amount of time dedicated to small talk at the beginning or end of the interview. While this can be a nice way to get to know the candidate further, when the hiring manager is on a tight schedule, engaging in small talk with each of the candidates delays the process and can throw off the managers schedule, not to mention the cost of delaying filling the position sooner than later. Video interviews cut down on the amount of chit chat that happens, thus keeping the initial screeni ng process succinct for both parties. Hiring managers can then devote more time to speaking in-person with the most qualified candidates, making better hires, faster and more efficiently.8.Observe body language and nonverbal cues. Some hiring managers rely on phone interviews as a way to vet candidates before deciding to bring them in for an in-person conversation. While phone interviews can be an effective way to determine whether this individual should earn an in-person interview, a phone discussion doesnt give you a real-life look at the candidate. Video interviewing enables you to see a candidates body language, facial expressions, and overall appearance. These clues can help you piece together a picture of how they would fit into your company. This visual screening gives you a better idea of how well the candidate researched your company based on how they dress for the video interview. You can also note how poised or rehearsed they appear, and if they take the time to respond tho ughtfully to the questions. If they take this screening stage seriously, they may be worthy of a call back to talk face-to-face.9. Invest time and effort into the best candidates. When youre blocking out an hour for each and every potential new hire, your process becomes extremely time-consuming. This is especially true when a large majority of these people just dont have the qualifications necessary to be a good fit. Instead of wasting your time talking to people who arent even close to what youre looking for, use video interviewing software to quickly sort through and decide whos a yes, whos a no, and whos a maybe. Save face-to-face interviews for only your most qualified candidates.Click To TweetFrom there, zero in on only the most qualified individuals. Save your face-to-face time for deeper discussions with them as you reach the final stages of the hiring process. 10.Be on the cutting edge.Utilizing video interviewing technology sends a subtle yet important message to potential new hires. It shows that your firm believes in the importance of adopting new technology into its daily business practices. They know that if they accept a job with you, they wont be stuck relying on old fax machines and other outdated practices to get their work done. Those candidates who are not afraid to take on new challenges, learn new tools and technology, and advance with the company will be more apt to apply.Besides the obvious benefits for those in charge of managing the hiring process, video interviews also provide a number of perks for those seeking out career opportunities, too. Some of these benefits include11. Make your candidates more comfortable. When youre sitting across from a hiring manager (or sometimes multiple managers, if youre in a panel interview situation) theres a lot of pressure to deliver a witty, intelligent response as quickly as possible. This is nerve-wracking for many job seekers, particularly if the question is challenging. The stress of the situati on can lead people to blurt out things they dont mean or stumble trying to clarify. In some instances, they may fail to deliver a response thats as eloquent as theyd like. It may not even be a true representation of their knowledge or character but there are no take-backs or re-dos in-person.Video interviews help to eliminate some of these issues. It gives an individual time to consider their response, making sure theyre saying what they mean and giving the best answer to the question posed to them. Having the opportunity to position themselves in their best light in the screening process, will give them more confidence to perform their best should they be chosen for an in-person interview later in the hiring process.12.Save the candidate from transportationheadaches.Rather than driving all over town, or even to another town, for a job interview that might not pan out, candidates can record a video interview when and where its convenient for them. Offering a video interview screeni ng demonstrates that you respect the candidates time and resources as well, which is more likely to appeal to a greater number of top talent.13. Enable after-hours interviewing. Many job seekers struggle to find a new career opportunity when theyre already employed because making time during the workday to head out on a job interview is a challenge, not to mention taboo. They may feel like they have to lie to their employer faking illness, doctor appointments, or client meetings to get to an interview. Video interviews give candidates time for the process without stressful work excuses.Click To TweetNot only is this stressful, but sometimes, its just not possible. Video interviewing makes it much easier to pursue new jobs since the professional can record their responses after hours or on the weekends instead of having to take time away from their current employment to have a discussion about future work.14. Let the candidate set the scene. No matter how inviting your schreibstube de sign is, its unfamiliar to candidates. There are new visual distractions and a general sense of disorientation. Chances are they wont have their bearings and feel at ease until the interview is well underway. And that can compromise their performance. With a video interview, however, candidates can choose where they record their answers. Whether its from the comfort of their den or at their favorite quiet coffee shop, theyll feel like they have home field advantage. That boost to their confidence will allow them to truly shine to the best of their abilities.15. Eliminate stressors associated with in-person interviews.Beyond the obvious pressures associated with heading into an in-person job interview, many candidates get nervous about other aspects of the process. Will they be able to find the office? What will the parking situation be like? Will they have to meet other members of the company? This only adds to the pressure theyre feeling and can cause otherwise qualified people to u nder-perform.Video interviewing technology provides a number of perks to both job seekers and hiring managers alike. Its a useful platform that makes the hiring process more convenient for businesses. Once thought of as something only major corporations could afford, video interviewing software has since become accessible to companies of all sizes. It makes it much easier for both large and small brands to incorporate it into the hiring process.Like some of these ideas? Want to see how video interviews can benefit your organization?
